3952 publishers have joined the 24th Tehran International Book Fair with 1614 publishers coming from abroad, according to IRI Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance, Sayyed Muhammad Husseini who was speaking to a media conference Tuesday.

The media conference which broached the case of the international cultural event was staged in the events hall of the ministry's department of cinema affairs and also heard from Bahman Dorri, his deputy in cultural affairs, Ehsanollah Hojjati, deputy chief executive of the book fair, Muhammad Allahyari, director of domestic publishers department, as well as aides to chief executive, Hasani, Afrash and Omidi.

The culture minister commenced his speech by thanking the Iranian reporters and journalists for their diligence in providing news coverage in the past few weeks of the major cultural rendezvous, adding that the elaborate cultural event would enormously contribute to promotion of book reading habits in the society.

The minister considers the book show as an opportunity for knowing latest titles, adding that the event helps exhibit the one-year performance of authors, polishers and translators to the public.

According to the minister, the 2011 book show has been staged at an area of 120 thousands square meters, adding however that the area could not expanded any further in light of several constraints.

As for promotional programs of the ministry, Mr. Husseini said works and titles of awarded publishers and authors of major Iranian book awards, including Annual Book Award and Jalal Award, would be presented in a single pavilion during the fair. Publishers who have their titles printed at least twice in the past Iranian calendar year, ending March 20 would be put on stalls in a separate show space.

The minister then gave some statistics about show inventories, saying 2,338 domestic publishers at hand in the fair were set to put about 208,000 titles on stalls with all titles having carried an edition date few years old at most.

In the international section, the minister said, 1,614 publishers from 67 foreign countries have already assured their presence, overall setting to present nearly 196,200 titles to visitors. 37 foreign countries have secured show pavilions in the fair with the rest, 30 publishers, having set up sales agencies, the minister added.

The minister said up to 500 guests of honor from the regional countries would joint the 2011 book show.

Touching on the motto of the book show, the minister said his ministry had planned several sponsorship projects for any authors or publishers who serve the book show's motto, namely "promotion of religious knowledge and cultural insight in the year of Economic Jihad.

The current Iranian year has been designated as the year of economic jihad by the Islamic Revolution Leader Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei in a New Year Day speech.

The minister said major publishers were allowed to receive and take over their show space as of Tuesday and carry out their layout works before May 3, the date of official inauguration of the book fair. The minister cautioned that those failing to meet the layout program or fail to withdraw would be replaced by their other peers.

The minister noted that the book show designed for more than sales of books thus the publishers must keep such individuals within their pavilions who are acquainted with librarian-related matters and could provide their audience with proper response as to their queries.

According to the minister, a line of subsidy worth 20 billion rials (about 2 million dollars) has been earmarked for university students inspecting the 24th book event. Each applicant student would receive 20 dollars in subsidy, according to the minister, who went on to say that several operating banks, to be named later, would dole out the subsidy stamps.

Commenting on sideline events planned for the 2011 book show, the culture minister said different panel discussions were set to be staged in four major cultural venues, namely "House of Men of Pen," "House of Authors of Children and Youngsters Works," "House of Publishing Records," and "Hall of Public Get-together with Authors" where newest titles of prominent Persian authors will be unveiled and reviewed.

Book review programs will also be organized in other pavilions, according to the minister, who spoke of special review sessions on the thoughts and works of Muhammad Qaz'ali, prominent Iranian personality of the 11th century.

The Men of Pen House is set to host four panel discussions a day, debating such spheres of culture as print and publishing status, national cultural macro-plans, literature of Islamic Revolution, the Sacred Defense (1980-88) and the literature of the Islamic Revolution, the minister said.

The house of publishing records will offer training workshops on translation studies and practice as well as indexing work, according to Mr. Husseini, who added that the House of Children and Youngsters Works would host top authors and cultural authorities with such programs as book reviews and direct public contact.

An ad hoc pavilion, the minister said, will be set up in the fairground for the commemoration of memory of Hadrat Fatema Zahra (S.A.), the noble daughter of the Last Messenger of Allah, Hadrat Muhammad (S.A.) with the book fair timetable coinciding with the Fatemiya Days when she departed the worldly life. Different books at a discount are up for grab in the pavilion and Alims are at hand to respond to religious queries of the inspectors.

The minister concluded his remarks by thanking the corps of culture, a total of 20,000 individuals, which has been helping organize and run the 24th International Tehran Book Fair.

Bahman Dorri, the ministerial deputy in cultural affairs, too made some remarks to the media, saying that authorities in charge of book fairs overseas have acknowledged that the Iranian event was the largest book show event worldwide.

The 24th book fair would open to public on May 4 and would run for 10 days until May 14. The show halls are placed inside the compound of Imam Khomeini Mosalla (grand mosque), located north of Tehran.
